John Clarke - Chair of Governors

I've been a governor and member of the Finance and Operations Committee since 2012 and Chair of Governors since 2015. My career has been varied and includes 13 years working for the co-op. As well as developing a range of business skills I learnt the importance co-operative values and principles. Everyday I saw the benefits of giving everyone the opportunity to realise their potential. Nowhere is this more important than in educating our young people. I use my professional experience to help the Academy maintain the highest standards of financial and operational management ensuring every penny delivers value to the academy's pupils. I use my belief in co-operation to work with all the different stakeholders to help every pupil be the best they can be. Through our governing body and sub-committees we help ensure the ethos of equality, responsibility and respect are at the heart of everything we do. Working with the dedicated staff and leadership team we drive continual improvement in pupil wellbeing and achievement. I share the ambition of all governors that the academy empowers everyone to reach their potential and be the best. If you think there's more we can do for our young people contact me, it's aways good to hear from parents and carers about their experiences of the academy. Governors are here for you and your children so get in touch. We value your feedback. Write or email me at academy@cas.coop

I am vice chair of the Board of Governors and Chair of the Achievement Committee.  I am also Vice Chair of Governors at Stoke on Trent Sixth form College.  My day job is as Dean of Academic Development at Staffordshire University which means I am responsible amongst other things for learning and teaching and quality.

My aspiration for the Co-operative Academy at Stoke-on-Trent is to become an outstanding academy and a beacon of excellence both locally and in the region.  But more than this I want every student to be supported to reach their potential so that they can go out into an uncertain world fully prepared to achieve their ambitions and approach with confidence any challenge they may face.

I'm a Store Manager for the Co-op Food currently working in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire but previously I have worked at branches in the Burslem and Tunstall areas of Stoke-on-Trent. I have been with the society for six and a half years and feel their ethos of championing a better way of doing business for the communities we serve is as vital as ever.

Prior to working for the Co-op, I trained to be a science teacher working at schools across Manchester and Cheshire. Though ultimately not for me I gained a valuable insight in the day to day running of a school and the challenges and difficulties that they face. I am passionate about education and believe that there should be fair chance for all no matter their background. I look forward to the challenges that being a school governor at CAS will bring.

I’m a HR Director for the Co-operative Group, based at Angel Square in Manchester, where I work with many of the head office teams including membership, marketing, finance and Digital. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Co-op as we relaunch our new brand and membership offer this summer, and reinforce our commitment that all Co-op colleagues will champion a better way of doing business in the communities we serve.

The ethos of championing a better way and seeking to continually improve life chances is one that I take with me into my role as a Co-op nominated Governor. I know it is well matched by the passion and energy I have already seen by those involved in CAS. I’m delighted to have joined the team in June 2016 and look forward to supporting the Academy for many years ahead. I will also support the Student Wellbeing Committee. Having visited back in May, I was inspired by the commitment of all those I met.  I’m really looking forward to playing my part in supporting all involved with the Academy to reach their full potential and ensure we provide a safe, enjoyable and positive learning environment for our students and staff.

I am a new member of the Academy’s Governing body. My youngest child is currently in Year 7. My experience is working with primary children, aged 3 to 11 years within a main stream school with Special Educational Needs. I believe that if children are having fun and enjoying what they are doing then it will have more of a positive impact on their learning. I am hard working and like to think outside the box and try to ensure all the children I work with reach their potential. I have been a Governor for 16 years at a primary level and I am looking forward to expanding my experiences and working at a high school level.

I work for the Co-operative Group in its Secretariat division and have responsibility for organising the Group’s Annual General Meeting and elections under ‘One Member One Vote’ which enables 2.7m Co-operative Group members to vote on Group policy, and their Board and Council representatives.

This role involves complex project management to deliver the general meeting as well as regular data analysis to ensure that the Group’s member register complies with regulatory needs. As part of this role, I work closely with the Group’s customer facing businesses and marketing functions to devise an annual communication plan to promote elections and encourage participation amongst members and employees.

Prior to this role, I managed the North West Regional Board in the Co-operative Group, and was responsible for managing governance arrangements for the Board and its 10 sub committees.

I believe that an approach to learning based on co-operative values and principles at CAS can encourage all students to maximise their learning potential and become actively involved citizens in their local communities.

Outside of work, I am a keen cyclist who enjoys spending weekends on long rides in the Peak District.

After a career as an avionics engineer in the Royal Air Force, followed by a short career break to bring up 2 children, I embarked on a second career in teaching. I am now in my 9th year, my 7th at the Co-operative Academy. I have a HNC in computing, a university degree in computing along with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Educational Practice. In addition to being a classroom teacher I have held a number of other posts, including head of Key Stage 3 ICT and Head of Business Studies. Here at the Co-operative Academy I am head of Computer Science and currently also head of Year 10 through maternity cover. I am proud to work at the Co-operative Academyand play my part in becoming a centre of educational excellence, where the young people of Tunstall and beyond can attend in the confidence that they will receive all the support, guidance and inspiration that they need to achieve their full potential. Being a teacher governor is a real privilege and I am passionate about being part of a team that continues to deliver sustainable success and year on year improvement. The staff at this Academy work extremely hard to create a safe and inspiring environment and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the views and ideas of the teaching team.

I fully support and embody the values of the Academy which are evident on a daily basis and I am keen on furthering the excellent work already carried out by both staff and students. An efficient and effective working environment has already been established, and now we can hopefully carry on along the road of excellence and become an outstanding Academy that benefits our community.

I am Dr Astrid Herhoffer, one of your governors . I head up the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies at Staffordshire University, one of the sponsors of your Academy. I lead a Faculty of creative subjects, including Art&Design, Humanities, Media, Journalism and Social Sciences. My own academic background is in the area of Russian and German literature, although I have not taught these subjects for quite some years now. The Faculty I lead is diverse in terms of its student intake as well as its breadth of subjects. I am a strong advocate of widening participation, giving every aspiring student the same chances of achieving their goals and aspirations, regardless of their background. The same goes for your Academy, where I am part of a governing body who will ensure that every pupil will be given the space and support to develop at their own pace to maximise their potential. I have a rich experience of supporting my own students through what can be challenging times and I am more than happy to extend this offer to any student of the Academy. If you want to take me up on my offer, please contact me ata.herhoffer@staffs.ac.uk.

The new school will build a higher profile for the city and will attract and inspire a whole generation. I believe it will engage and energise future students and make a major difference to young people with the introduction of a modern teaching environment. The school has brought a fresh, alive and energetic feel towards studying. With all the excitement the school has never felt so vibrant. All of the lively energy, the bubbly anticipation, the introduction of the new high tech facilities will benefit and encourage the students to succeed.
