Academy Celebrates World Book Day 2015

The Co-operative Academy hosted yet another fantastic day for World Book Day for our Partner Primary Schools. Pupils from Summerbank Primary School, Star Academy, Sandyford and St. Mary's CE Primary School all participated in a celebration of World Book Day, hosted by Mrs Higgs and The Co-operative Young leaders. The event took place on Thursday 5th March in The Learning Resources Centre at The Academy.

Primary school pupils had the opportunity to experience many different activities throughout the day. The Learning Resource Centre was transformed for the event; decorated with bunting, Union Jacks and a traditional British Tea Party table. Each primary school pupil tried many activities and a Co-operative Young Leader acted as a guide and leader for each team. The craft activity table gave pupils the opportunity to create bunting with their own names on it to take back to their primary school and to be displayed in their classrooms. At the sound effect table pupils used a variety of instruments and props to create sounds using the poem,” The Sound Collector”  by Roger Mc Gough.

Pupils were able to engage in word puzzles and word searches that were created for them by the CYL’s in their Literacy booklets. The Treasure Island activity gave pupils the opportunity to use their imagination and to reflect upon being stranded on a Treasure Island.  A themed Treasure Hunt was also very popular and pupils had to answer questions about various British Authors.

With so many activities and so much fun  everyone was relieved to find The Mad Hatters Tea Party refreshment area, where  they refuelled to give them energy to carry on and enjoy the day.

Pupils from St. Mary’s CE shared their thoughts;

Rhianna Dale, “ I enjoyed the Treasure Hunt  and trying to find authors as a team”.

Anastasia Pennock , “The music table and poem that we used  to create sounds with was really good.”

The Co-operative Young Leaders enjoyed organising and delivering the World Book Day, their thoughts were very positive:

"It was an amazing day, I loved working with the primary school pupils and taking part in so many activities”.  Ariella Schultz, Year 8 Co-operative Young Leader

"My favourite activity was the Sound Effect table and my group enjoyed making so many sounds  that reflected  the Sound Collector Poem”.  Joseph Peake, Year 9 Co-operative Young Leader

A Special mention and thank you to Vaneeza Parr, Year 8 Co-operative Young Leader, for all the extra time given for resource preparation before the event.
