Budding swimmer Mario stole the show at the Staffordshire County Swimming Gala on Saturday 25th February and Sunday 26th February at Stafford Pool. Representing Newcastle Staffs Swimming Club, Mario put in some stellar performances in an event that saw over 200 people compete.
Aged 15, Mario competed against competitors of 17 and 18 years of age – matching them length for length as he finished in the top 3 of every event he entered.
Mario achieved a brilliant 2nd place in the 100m Fly final and was the youngest in the event, whilst gaining a credible 3rd Place in 400M freestyle for the Senior age group but a 2nd place for his age group .
In the 200M Individual Medley Mario achieved 3rd place for his age group; he also competed the following weekend - coming 3rd in the 200M backstroke and 3rd in 200M fly in his age group.
Mario trains relentlessly every day, either in the pool or gym whilst also putting in the miles in daily running sessions to achieve his dream of competing at the Olympics. Under the tutelage of swimming coach Gill Jones and using role model Michael Phelps as his motivation (studying videos for techniques) Mario embodies commitment and passion – a perfect role model for his peers at the Academy.
We all wish him the best of luck at his next performance in Sheffield in 5 weeks’ time.
