Able Writers' Day

Some of our students took part in an Able Writers' Day for Year 7 at Thistley Hough Academy on 31st March. The author running this event was the brilliant performance poet, Tony Walsh. Tony is a fantastic poet who really does inspire everyone he works with.

Tony's poetry has been published on both sides of the Atlantic as well as displayed with an LS Lowry image at both Tate Modern and The British Museum as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund "Best of British" exhibition.

A multiple winner and finalist in top-level poetry slam competitions, Tony is the current Manchester Literature Festival Comedy Slam Champion and was the runner-up in "The Times" UK Allstars Slam Final at Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2008. His impactful and accessible poetry has been showcased nationally including on BBC1, BBC Sport, Sky Sports, BBCRadio 2 and BBC6Music.

Tony has showcased at prestigious international poetry festivals including Ledbury, Strokestown and StAnza. He has also performed at the Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw; as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 50th anniversary celebrations; and as website Poet in Residence for the world-renowned Glastonbury Festival.

Tony has a poem titled 'New Beginnings' which works extremely well with Year 7 groups at the outset of their time at Secondary School - please follow this link to listen to Tony's audio performance of the poem: New Beginnings

The students had chance to work closely with Tony, experiencing a number of writing workshops. Olivia; Hiba: Kelisha: Mayowa: Maria: Caitlynn: Naomi: Aliah: Lucja and Gloria all enjoyed the workshop and they have produced some fantastic examples of writing (many of them are still working on them) so watch this space.
