Living for Sports!
Last week saw former Olympian and World Championships Silver Medallist Anthony Clark visit the Academy to deliver an inspiring workshop for our table tennis pioneers. After a morning of motivational seminars, Anthony led the students on some fantastic physical activities before showcasing some of his brilliant badminton skills.
Sky Sports “Living For Sports” is an initiative that helps students develop a range of skills such as team work that will help improve confidence. This is done through sport with the help of ambassadors and mentors who have enjoyed fantastic careers in a range of sports. Our academy was lucky to welcome former professional badminton player Anthony Clark as our Sky Sports athlete mentor.
Kick starting the day was Anthony’s inspiring story of how he made it to the top of his profession through hard work and commitment. This was before the “Six Keys to Success” workshop that really got our students thinking about what it takes to become successful.
After a morning of problem solving and thought provoking insights from the world of sport, Anthony led our students through a series of physical activities that helped improve their teamwork skills. One of the activities required one member of each team to think of a sports person with the rest our their team taking it in turn to run over 10 metres and ask questions, to which they could only receive a yes or no answer.
Following on from this was an activity to see how long our students could hold the “plank” position, with each team encouraging their team mates.
Then it was the turn of our students to impress Anthony, as they showed off their table tennis skills. This included Anthony taking on some of the students in “best of 5” matches.
Concluding the memorable day was a badminton session in which Anthony enthralled all with his badminton skills before a few activities to end the day.
Mr James, who started the table tennis pioneers at the Academy, also helped with the day, and was very impressed with what he saw. “The day was brilliant. We couldn’t thank Anthony enough for his time and the insight he passed on to our students. They got so much from the day. And a massive well done to the students who acquitted themselves superbly throughout the day.”
Anthony said: “I really enjoyed the day and working with the students at the Co-op Academy. I always judge a school on ‘would I send my kids to this school?’ and I definitely would at the Co-op Academy. The students were fantastic throughout and were a credit to the academy. And their table tennis skills were very impressive.”
Anthony will be coming back to the Academy later in the summer to deliver motivational assemblies to more of our students.
