Post 16 Experience

Post 16 Experience

The age of compulsory education was raised to 18 by the Education and Skills Act 2008; the change took effect in 2013 for 16-year-olds and 2015 for 17-year-olds.

Post 16 Options include:

·         EMPLOYMENT (with Training)

With this in mind the Academy feels it is important that students get the chance to sample the various routes offered to them after the end of Year 11. All of Year 10 will take part in a Post-16 Experience.

In 2017 the programme will run as follows:

Thursday 21st June - Year 10 to Newcastle College for a Taster Session

Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th July -  Year 10 Apprenticeship taster at Stoke-on-Trent College/Reaseheath Taster Days

Friday 7th July – Higher Horizons, University Taster

Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th July – Year 10 Secondary College (Visits to Stoke-on-Trent college and Stoke Sixth Form)

Students leaving the Academy in Year 11 will face increasing levels of competition from other students from across the city and further afield when looking for college placements, apprenticeships and jobs with training.

Being able to set themselves about from the rest of the crowd is vital in attaining their preferred place, this is where volunteering can be really helpful. By volunteering students are showing they have a commitment to something outside of their day to day activities. It also shows they are happy to work with others, work hard and adapt to changing circumstances.

We have a database of volunteering opportunities for students ranging from charity shops and retail to gardening and play work.

If a student is interested in volunteering or has a specific career in mind, we can help find a suitable placement, assist with completing the relevant forms and source any references and equipment.
